SURVEY: Household Clutter Stops Most Americans From Unwinding at Home

Published April 21, 2026

A recent survey conducted by Talker Research involving 2,000 participants reveals that two-thirds of Americans find it difficult to relax in their cluttered living spaces. On average, Americans dedicate six hours each week to cleaning activities, which amounts to nearly an entire workday.

Over a three-month period, the typical individual missed two social engagements and experienced two disputes within the household due to untidiness. The most frequent sources of stress include unwashed dishes, dirty floors, and bathroom stains. Mopping alone consumes 29 minutes, with almost half of those surveyed requiring 30 minutes of mental preparation before starting this task.

Adults allocate only 18% of their year to leisure time, with many reporting feelings of fatigue following cleaning duties.

Seventy percent of respondents express that adulthood is less pleasurable than they had anticipated, as their limited free time is largely taken up by demanding household responsibilities.
