6 'Invisible' Household Tasks That Exhaust Moms’ Time and Energy

Published April 21, 2026

We asked mothers about the unseen chores they handle that demand far more effort than they might seem to at first glance. Here’s what they shared:

Lina Forrestal, a content creator and host of “The New Mamas Podcast,” described the challenge of maintaining her rapidly growing baby and toddler’s wardrobes with properly fitting clothes as a “major struggle.”

“Everything from pants, shirts, socks, to shoes,” she explained to HuffPost. “Then comes the burden of buying new items and sorting through, donating, or selling the old clothes that no longer fit. It’s the biggest hidden time drain.”

Additionally, it’s necessary to ensure the clothing matches the season — meaning having the correct sizes for bathing suits in summer and sweaters and pants for colder weather.

Caitlin Murray, the creator behind @BigTimeAdulting on Instagram, noted that although she has countless invisible labor tasks, the most time-consuming is deciding what her family will eat daily. This involves not only coming up with meal ideas but also ensuring the options are balanced, nutritious, and appealing to all three of her children.

“I love food and care deeply about the variety and nutrition my kids receive. While we do indulge in treats, I’m constantly trying to find new ways to get them to eat the healthy stuff as well,” she told HuffPost.

“It’s important to highlight that if kids don’t enjoy their meals, mealtime becomes a nightmare. I get personally triggered by complaints or dissatisfaction with food, so it’s never as simple as just grocery shopping and cooking,” she added.

Comic artist Debbie Tung also emphasized the time spent carefully planning meals and creating grocery lists to avoid buying items that might go unused and wasted.

“Sometimes I prepare meals ahead of time if I know I’ll be very busy on a certain day,” she said. “I try to ensure my child’s diet includes enough fruits and vegetables every day.”

3. Keeping track of household essentials

While it may not seem like a huge task, constantly monitoring which household items need restocking or replacing — such as diapers, toiletries, cleaning supplies, snacks, and pet food — demands significant mental effort.

“Why is it usually Mom who knows what products or food the family is running low on at any moment?” Renee Reina Grenon, host of “The Mom Room” podcast, told HuffPost. “Because she’s the one packing lunches, preparing meals, packing diaper bags, changing diapers, handling bath time, signing permission slips for field trips, doing laundry, grocery shopping, and more. The list never ends.”

4. Managing school schedules, requirements, and communication

For Starr, these school-related responsibilities involve “much more than what’s obvious.”

One example includes reading all school emails and papers sent home and responding to anything that requires action.

“For some of these, I have to check my calendar to see if I can take time off work to volunteer in the classroom or at a school event, or mark the calendar for half days, field trips, or other plans,” Starr said.

“For other items, it means making sure a child completes the associated work, like reviewing spelling words nightly or filling out a reading log due every Friday,” she added.

Additional duties include signing up for after-school activities, assisting with school fundraisers, obtaining doctor’s notes for excused absences, and replying to teachers’ questions or notes.

Don’t forget tracking special themed days or spirit weeks, “making sure these days are noted on the calendar, remembered, and planned for,” Starr said. “‘Is my tie-dyed shirt clean? Today is tie-dye day!’”

5. Scheduling and managing appointments

In writer and content creator CJ Kelsey’s household, she usually handles arranging and keeping track of appointments.

“My husband is happy to attend appointments, but I’m responsible for booking my kids’ doctor visits and now my parents’ as well,” she told HuffPost. “Making the calls takes a lot of time, and organizing them all is a headache.”

This also includes related tasks like completing forms before appointments and ensuring the front desk has current insurance and address information.

Planning a child’s birthday party can be demanding but happens once a year. However, attending other kids’ parties multiple times a month or more is common.

“It may not seem like it, but being a guest involves a lot of effort,” Forrestal said. “From remembering to RSVP, buying a gift, to mentally calculating how to arrive on time — usually on weekends packed with other events.”
