Home Coffee Brewing Reaches 12-Year Peak as Americans Opt Out of Coffee Shops

Published April 16, 2026

A survey conducted by the National Coffee Association indicates that 85% of coffee consumers prepared their coffee at home the day before, reaching the highest level recorded since 2012. This marks a significant departure from the pre-pandemic trend favoring visits to cafés.

Experts link this shift to the rise of hybrid work models, financial constraints, and advancements in home coffee-making technology. Additionally, increased coffee prices caused by global supply chain disruptions have discouraged patrons from frequenting coffee shops.

For those who do consume coffee outside their homes, offices and drive-thru locations have now become more popular than traditional walk-in cafés. Gerd Müller-Pfeiffer, a former Nestlé executive, observes that "home machines now deliver near out-of-home quality."

Patterns in coffee drinking reveal that 38% of consumers enjoy their coffee later in the morning, 22% in the afternoon, and 11% in the evening. Overall coffee consumption remains robust, with 66% having consumed coffee the previous day—surpassing any other beverage.

On average, Americans drink 2.8 cups of coffee daily, amounting to over 500 million cups consumed nationwide.
