Gen Z Develops 'Anxiety Bags' to Address Mental Health Challenges

Published April 16, 2026

Young adults are putting together "anxiety bags" stocked with sensory items designed to help cope with panic attacks and stress.

This practice has surged in popularity as 61% of Americans between the ages of 18 and 26 report having diagnosed anxiety disorders, with 43% experiencing panic attacks on a monthly basis. Dr. Kyra Bobinet describes this approach as "genius," highlighting that these kits offer sensory distractions during moments of intense distress. Typical contents include sour candy, essential oils, fidget toys, and cards with breathing exercises.

Dr. Jenny Martin explains that these tools function to "redirect focus away from anticipatory thought loops and bring attention back to the present moment."

Mental health professionals advise trying out various methods in relaxed settings and then slowly decreasing reliance on these aids over time.
