91-Year-Old Woman Discovered Safe and Gaming in Bedroom During Welfare Check

Published April 16, 2026

Westlake, OH – What began as a standard welfare check on a 91-year-old resident of Westlake, Ohio, led to an unexpected discovery.

The senior citizen is enrolled in the city’s Are You Okay? program, which offers daily phone check-ins for participants. When she did not respond to Thursday’s scheduled call, dispatchers and her daughter made several attempts to reach her without success. Police officers then went to her home but received no response at the door. Using a garage code, officers entered and found her car parked inside.

Body camera footage shows an officer announcing “Westlake police” upon entering the house. Radio transmissions later confirmed the situation: “We’re here with her,” the officer said. “She’s playing video games in her bedroom.”

Officials confirmed the woman was safe and sound, explaining she had missed the calls because she was focused on trying to beat her video game high score. “Everyone got a good laugh out of it,” Vogel remarked.
