Annual Pet Ownership Expenses Climb to $4,272 in 2026

According to a 2026 study by Healthy Paws, pet owners spend an average of $4,272 each year on routine care for their dogs or cats. Over the course of an average 12-year lifespan, these expenses accumulate to more than $50,000.

Veterinary costs have surged by 43% between 2021 and 2026, with the average insurance claim amount increasing to $392, marking a 32% rise since 2020.

Emergency surgical procedures can cost anywhere from $3,500 to $7,000, while treatments for cancer range between $6,000 and $15,000.

Among pet owners without insurance who face substantial medical bills, 38% would resort to using credit cards, and 20% would completely deplete their savings.

The average monthly premium for pet insurance is $62 for dogs and $32 for cats.

Utilizing telehealth services has the potential to save pet owners up to $24,000 over the lifetime of their pet by minimizing unnecessary emergency room visits.
