9 Small Habits That Help You Stay Calm When Feeling Nervous

Published April 15, 2026

Here are nine habits that can help you remain calm during moments of nervousness:

When we are caught up in our thoughts, second-guessing what to say next, filled with doubts and insecurities, we lose the ability to be fully present. Being present and relaxed is the most effective way to boost social confidence. Focus on what is being said, not just for yourself but also to help others stay present. This approach positions you as a calming influence and leader, creating a positive experience for everyone involved.

This habit is crucial. Many people fear the "awkward" silences that occur in conversations and rush to fill them with "umms" and "ahhs" to ease the tension. However, this only results in hurried and less meaningful exchanges. Embracing silence was transformative for me. There is no rule that silence must be avoided. Relax and allow space to exist. You don’t always need to have an immediate response. Accept the uncertainty because it will always be part of conversations. Demonstrating comfort with silence holds a unique power.

Often, without realizing it, we tense our shoulders and bodies when facing uncomfortable social situations. This tension increases nervousness and stiffness. You can break this cycle by becoming aware of physical tightness and consciously releasing it. When we relax physically, our minds follow, making us calmer and more thoughtful.

Slowing down your movements and speech provides immediate relief. If you act quickly and make jerky motions like a nervous rabbit, you increase the amount of information your brain must process in less time, which is stressful. By slowing down, you send a calming signal to your brain that you are comfortable with your current situation and not resisting it. This helps deepen your relaxation.

5. Recognize that others also experience worry, insecurity, and imperfections

It’s easy to exaggerate how confident and composed others appear. People often seem more at ease than they truly are, but they too face insecurities and challenges. Understanding this perspective helps you take things less seriously and fosters a sense of connection.

Similar to slowing down, adopting stillness in your demeanor generally helps you physically relax. While some situations call for more expressiveness, especially in loud environments, remaining still in calmer settings enhances your performance and lowers your heart rate. Imagine yourself relaxing by a poolside, free of worries. Avoid unnecessary physical activity. Let your body be at ease. Breathe deeply into your abdomen, where much tension is stored. This stillness communicates that everything is okay and earns respect.

I’m not suggesting you smile constantly like an overly eager person. Smile occasionally, genuinely, and subtly—even if you don’t feel great. Smiling relaxes both body and mind and sets you on a positive path. It also disarms those around you, leading to more harmonious and soothing interactions.

8. Listen attentively with your entire body

Many of us are preoccupied with thinking of the next clever thing to say, which prevents us from truly listening. Pay attention not only to the words but also to body language and what is implied between the lines. Expanding your focus this way reduces self-consciousness and surprises the speaker. How? By genuinely understanding their message, which makes them feel heard and helps you stay relaxed.

In my teens and twenties, I struggled because I held myself to high social standards. I felt compelled to be funny, talkative, and never silent. This insecurity caused shame when I spoke less. However, there is no specific way you must behave. Most of the pressure is self-imposed. Releasing the need to perform or be anything in particular is the true key to confidence. You’ll realize that without pressure, you already possess it.
