SURVEY: 54% of Americans Say They Are Very or Extremely Close to at Least One Sibling

According to a recent survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, 54% of Americans who have siblings describe their relationship with at least one sibling as either extremely or very close. Within this group, 24% characterize their bond as extremely close, while 30% report it as very close.

When ranking family connections, sibling relationships fall in the middle tier. They are rated lower than connections with spouses (85%), chosen family members (73%), and parents (65%), but rank higher than relationships with grandparents, cousins, and aunts or uncles.

The survey also reveals gender differences, with women reporting slightly stronger sibling ties at 57%, compared to 52% among men.

In terms of race and ethnicity, Black and Hispanic adults indicate higher levels of closeness with siblings, at 64% and 63% respectively, whereas only 50% of White adults report similar closeness.

Age also plays a role: adults between 30 and 64 years old are less likely to feel close to their siblings than both younger and older age groups.

When it comes to emotional support, only 38% of respondents say they would turn to a sibling for comfort, and 24% mention that they often provide emotional support to their siblings.
