STUDY: Digital Detox Can Reverse 10 Years of Brain Aging

On average, Americans dedicate four to five hours each day to their smartphones, yet recent research reveals that brief digital breaks can significantly enhance brain performance.

In a study published in PNAS Nexus, 467 individuals were instructed to disable internet access on their phones for a two-week period, while still permitting phone calls, text messaging, and computer usage. This intervention led to a reduction in daily online time from 314 minutes to 161 minutes. The findings demonstrated notable improvements in mood, focus, and mental well-being, comparable to reversing a decade of cognitive decline associated with aging. Participants who were unable to complete the entire detox still experienced benefits from partial participation.

Additionally, a separate study conducted by Harvard University indicated that just one week of lowered smartphone usage resulted in decreased levels of anxiety, depression, and insomnia.
