Renowned Session Drummer James Gadson Passes Away at 86

James Gadson, the celebrated drummer known for supporting legendary musicians such as Diana Ross, Bill Withers, and Marvin Gaye, has died at the age of 86.

His wife, Barbara, confirmed his death on Thursday, mentioning that he had recently faced health issues including surgery and a back injury caused by a fall.

Gadson emerged as a pivotal figure in funk, soul, and disco drumming throughout the 1970s, laying down rhythms on timeless tracks like Bill Withers' "Lean on Me," the Jackson 5's "Dancing Machine," and Diana Ross' "Love Hangover."

As a highly in-demand session musician, he also contributed to recordings by the Temptations, Leonard Cohen, Paul McCartney, Beck, Justin Timberlake, and Harry Styles.

Born in Kansas City in 1939, Gadson was raised in a musical household and first encountered funk music during his service in the Air Force.

Beck described him as "a gentle giant," while Questlove highlighted his significant influence on the art of breakbeat drumming.
