Majority of Americans Frustrated by Perceived Tax Inequity Among the Wealthy

A recent survey conducted by Pew Research Center involving 8,512 adults reveals that 61% of Americans are highly troubled by the perception that affluent individuals do not contribute their equitable portion in federal taxes. Similarly, 60% express significant concern that corporations are not paying their fair share. The complexity of the tax system also causes considerable frustration, with 51% of respondents indicating it bothers them "a lot." Additionally, 41% of Americans report dissatisfaction with their own personal tax burden, marking an increase compared to previous years.

In contrast, only 12% of those surveyed are troubled by the notion that lower-income individuals do not pay enough in taxes. The data highlights a sharp partisan divide: 81% of Democrats feel strongly that wealthy people underpay taxes, compared to just 41% of Republicans who share this view.

Furthermore, 60% of Americans now believe they pay more than their fair share in taxes, an increase from 56% in 2023. This sentiment is most prevalent among upper-income earners and middle-aged individuals.
